The Easy and Inexpensive Way to go Blonde at Home

April 17, 2025 by TheChristianMamaMemoirs Leave a Comment

Recently, I became tired of my natural brown hair and had the itch to go blonde again. I hadn’t had my hair done professionally in over two years, the blonde I had looked more like dishwater and my brown roots had grown well past my ears. It was a hot mess, minus the hot and it was really starting to affect my confidence. With being a single mom to a small toddler, blogging part time, and running a business Monday thru Friday–I just do not have the time (or energy) to sit at a salon for 4+ hours to potentially get the results I wanted or to be shammed into something else. So, I decided that I was going to go blonde at home.

Doing this saved me a ton of money, time, and I am so happy with my results. So I decided to share the exact steps I took, along with the exact products that I used. This will be my very first hair post and I know you are going to love it.

Blonde Hair at Home without Bleach

So, no I did not accomplish my blonde hair at home with bleach. However, I did use box dye. *gasp* I know. This box dye is absolutely amazing though. It comes with an amazing protective hair oil that you apply to your hair prior to the dye and an after-color purple toning treatment. I actually used two boxes in total because my hair is so thick. I left the dye on my hair for 35 minutes total prior to rinsing it out and using the after-color treatment. My hair did not feel dead, in fact it felt pretty much the same as it felt prior to lightening it. However, I will say that my hair was left with some orange and yellow tones. They were not horrible, but I definitely did not love them.

Which brings me to the next step.

How to Dye your Hair at Home Without it Turning Orange?

Or how to fix the unwanted tones in your hair.

The best way to fix the unwanted tones in your hair is to refer to a basic color wheel.

When looking at the color wheel you will notice that one side of the wheel contains warm colors, and the other side of the wheel contains cool colors. How does this relate to toning?

Well, whatever tone you are trying to remove from your hair you will need to use the opposite tone. In other words, you will be using cool tones to remove the warm tones in your hair. Most people think everything blonde can be fixed with a purple shampoo. This is not true.

A blue based toner with help to remove orange tones.

A violet based toner will help to remove yellow or green (remember for swimming) tones from your hair.

What Toner will Remove Orange and Yellow Tones from your Hair?

So, I actually mixed two toners together. I did this because I had some orange and yellow tones in my hair, and I wanted to get rid of both at one time. I was able to accomplish this using my simple concoction.

WELLA COLORCHARM T81

I used one bottle on T81 Intense Ash Blonde to get rid of the yellow and light orange tones in my hair.

WELLA COLORCHARM T14

T14 is a Violet-Blue Base, making it the perfect orange fighter. I mixed one bottle of the T14 with the T81 with a 20 Volume Creme Developer.

Other Necessary Equipment for the Perfect Hair

There are two different route you could take here. You could choose to use:

  • Reusable Hair Dye Bottle
    • This is my personal preference. Just because it is much easier to use, well in my opinion. It is also more reliable when measuring ounces or milliliters.

How to Protect your Hair after Going Blonde

Blonde hair takes a few special hair products to maintain its beautiful color and to avoid appearing dull.

After Color Sealer

After dying your hair, you should always use a sealer. It is especially important to do this when lightening your hair because your hair is ready to soak up anything. This is why bright vibrant colors do so well on freshly bleached hair. If you do not properly seal your hair, I promise you are going to run into issues with your color. Like your hair turning colors quickly from hard water. Please seal your do after achieving blonde hair at home.

Purple Shampoo

Blondes love purple shampoo. However, some really overuse the product. You only need to use this once or twice per month. Using it more than that can result in dry and damaged hair.

Purple Conditioner

Use this after using purple shampoo. You can call these your hair treatment days. This one is my personal favorite, it is extremely pigmented.

Blue Toning Mask

Remember our earlier talk about orange and yellow tones? Ya, do not rely Soley on purple. You are also going to want something with a blue base to keep your blonde perfect.

Moisturizing Hair Mask

This should be used once a week, especially if you use a lot of heat and styling products on your hair. It will keep your hair soft and manageable.

Heat Protectant

Always use a heat protectant when using heat on your hair. This includes a blow dryer. This is my favorite heat protectant. It makes my hair feel so soft, adds shine, and smells delicious. I have faithfully used this product for years.
