There is always a new trend available on the internet. Whether it be a makeup trend, fashion trend, or hair trend. The most recent trend taking the internet by storm is the proper way to care for Irish Curls. Personally, I love when a trend is centered around embracing natural beauty, such as natural curls or waves. I also love when it is centered around something I also have. So, let’s talk about it.
What are Irish Curls?
Irish Curls is a term that has recently been popularized on social media. The hair type refers to a hair type that is characterized by a distinct difference in curl pattern throughout the hair. Most commonly those with Irish Curls will have a tighter curl pattern on the under layers of the hair than they do on the top layers of the hair. In other words, the Irish Curls hair type has various curl patterns and types of hair throughout. The pattern is commonly attributed to genetics (duh), with those of an Irish or Celtic descent being more prone to the hair pattern. However, this hair pattern can also be a sign that your hair needs a proper curl routine and some TLC.
How Rare are Irish Curls?

You may be surprised to learn that Irish Curls are not rare at all. In fact, the hair pattern is actually fairly common. Like I mentioned, it is most common amongst Irish or Celtic descent, but it is not limited to any heritage. The variations in the hair texture stem from the shape of the hair follicles. While some people have consistent hair follicle shape, some people do not. Those who do not, are more likely to have Irish Curls. However, damage to the outer layers of the hair (from color treating, heat, etc) can create a similar effect. This is due to the inner layer remaining healthier.
How to Care for Irish Curls

You will be happy to learn that caring for Irish Curls does not have to be a complicated task. With a few great products, you can turn your frustrating half and half frizzy hair into beautiful curls.
Curly Hair Friendly Shampoo & Conditioner
There are two different curl friendly shampoo and conditioners that I recommend for use with Irish Curls.
Prose-
You have more than likely heard of prose before. Prose is a company that create custom hair care formulas. This is a great option for me, because my specific formula tends to my Irish curls in addition to keeping the brass out of my blonde hair.
Redken All Soft Mega Curls-
Redken is another well-known brand, and if you do not want to use a custom subscription service for your hair care. This is the brand that I would recommend using. It does not only cater to curls but is also great for extremely dry and damaged hair.
Curl Friendly Hairbrush

It is generally recommended to avoid regular hair brushes on curly hair to avoid frizz and breakage. When it comes to curly hair there are two different brushes that are well known for being great for curly hair. These brushes can be helpful for detangling hair, distributing products, and enhancing curl definition.
Bounce Curl Brush-
The Bounce Curl brush comes in 4 different colors, has a side for curl definition and a side for volume. It also has over 600 5-star reviews on Amazon. The brush is known for smoothing, defining, and separating curls without the use of any heat. The company is also woman owned and operated.

The Denman Brush-
The Denman brush is well-known in the curly hair community. So well-known that it has over 77,000 5-star reviews on Amazon. Customer rave about how this brush defines their thick curls and the durability of the brush. That being said, it is a great tool, and I do love mine. However, I will admit that it can take more practice to be able to use the brush effectively than the bounce brush.

Hair Oil
There is a ton of more expensive hair oils on the market, however a higher price does not always mean that the oil is better. The purpose of using hair oil on curly hair is to assist in sealing in moisture, adding shine, reducing frizz, and protecting hair from damage. They also contribute to styling and detangling. I love this OGC Renewing Argan Oil of Morocco because it is budget friendly, has a great scent, adds moisture to the hair that makes it both shiny and soft. This little bottle of gold has over 36,000 5-star reviews on Amazon.
The Perfect Curl Cream

Curl cream is another thing that I personally get from Prose. There is just something about having your own custom hair care products that makes it exciting to do your own hair.
If Prose is not your thing, the Rizo’s curl cream is known for defining and enhancing natural hair texture. The product creates weightless, bouncy, and soft touchable curls. The 4,500 5-star reviews on Amazon speak for themself.

The Kinky Curl Hair Gel
The Kinky Curly Custard Gel is another budget friendly product with over 5,000 five-star reviews. This gel is known for adding moisture to the hair, in addition to providing curl definition and hold. It is said to bring out the natural curl pattern you never knew that you had, which is important for Irish curls. A little bit of this product goes a very long way.

Curly Hair Diffuser
Travel and budget friendly hair diffuser that has the ability to reduce frizz and static, in addition to enhancing natural curls. I know that it does not look like it, but the diffuser is completely removable. This diffuser has over 15,000 5-star reviews on Amazon and costs less than $35.00. It is a complete steal for the quality.
My Prose curl cream doubles as a heat protectant, if you do not use Prose you will need to also get a heat protectant. My favorite has been the Dry bar Prep Rally Prime and Prep Spray. It smells delicious and leaves hair feeling so soft.

The Ultimate Curl Refresher
One common misconception about the curly hair method is that you have to repeat the steps every day. However, that is not true. All you need to do is sleep in a silk bonnet to protect your curls, spray your curls with water to dampen the hair, and then use the WOW Dream Coat for curly hair and you have beautiful curls again. At this point you can either leave your hair to air dry or use a diffuser.
