A baby carrier is one of the first things that I added to my baby registry. However, I had no idea what I was looking for. I did not consider some very important things like my baby’s healthy hip development, if it was a hip seat carrier, weight range, weight distribution, or whether it was comfortable or not for the baby wearer. Because of this I ended up purchasing more than 5 baby carriers before my son was 6 months old. That being said, I know a thing or two about picking the best baby carriers.
What You Need to Look for When purchasing a Baby Carrier
- Padded shoulder straps and Waist Belt. As your baby grows the added weight from the weight of your child will make a huge difference on the ease of use with your carrier. Not picking a carrier with appropriate shoulder straps and a thick waist belt that is the perfect fit for the wearer will likely lead to chronic back pain.
- An adjustable seat and padded seat. One of the carriers that I ended up purchasing was on that was considered high end and was pretty expensive (spoiler alert I do not recommend). I used it for a short trip to the zoo with my baby and by the end of the trip my baby’s legs had marks of them from hanging in the carrier. I never used that carrier again. After switching to one with an adjustable padded seat, I never had that issue again.
- Note: The international hip dysplasia institute does not suggest a narrow-based carrier for long periods of time to prevent damage to baby’s hips. A carrier that does have a seat typically has a wide base and is a better option.
- Hybrid carriers. Some baby carriers are only front carrier; however, the best choice would be one that has front facing capabilities for front carry, offers side carrying or as a hip carrier, and can use for back carry. Also, you want to make sure there is an easy way to access all of the different carry positions with a relatively simple design.
- Adjustable carrier. Instead of buying a dozen different carried I recommend purchasing one baby carrier that will grow with your baby. Which means that you will want to check the weight restrictions for each carrier and know your baby’s weight. Some carriers will come with a removable infant insert that will make it possible for your baby to use it from infant size to toddler size. That being said, you should also ensure it adjusts in multiple areas and has extra straps.
- Note: The American Academy of Pediatrics advice against allowing babies to curl up into the C shape while in carriers as it can contribute to breathing problems, additionally you should be checking consistently that you can see your baby’s face, and nothing is blocking their mouth or nose. A good practice is making sure that baby’s head is close enough to kiss.
A Popular Baby Carrier that I did not Love
As surprising as it may be, I did not love baby wraps. I actually purchased the extremely popular sling wrap and that was probably me least favorite. In my opinion, these types of carriers do not offer a ton of support, and they can be a bit complicated to out on. I had to YouTube a “How To” video every single time I went to use it which was a hassle to say the least then I still felt like my baby was going to fall out at any moment. That being said, it was definitely not hands free. I always had to have a hand on my baby. A traditional baby carrier, in my opinion, is a great choice in comparison to the baby wraps.
What is the Best Baby Carrier?
In my opinion the best baby carrier is one that checks all of the boxes.
It supports babies upper body, it has a padded seat with a wide base, it is adjustable to offer a great fit as baby grows through their months of life, you can use it as a front carrier, a back carrier, a hip hold, and it supports adult wearers with thick padded straps and an adjustable waistband.
I also prefer one that is comfortable for longer periods of time.
Some other great features are a detachable bib, a buckle between the shoulder blades (less stress on the body), and side pockets where you can store your cellphone or keys.
So what carrier checks all these boxes?
It has a certified padded hip seat, a removable bib or teething pad, a waist extender (to fit all sized adults), a storage bag on the side of the waist strap, and it fits children from newborn to toddler.
& Yes it can be worn as a front carrier and a back carrier. Additionally, the top portion as completely removable which will allow you to use it as a hip carrier.
