What is Halloumi Cheese?
Halloumi Cheese is a traditional Cypriot cheese. It is typically made from a blend of sheep and goat’s milk and packaged raw. However, it is sometimes made using cow’s milk. It really just depends–if you are concerned about the source just read the package! The flavor is unique, as it has a salty and tangy flavor and is often cooked versus eat raw from the package. The cheese is known for its high melting point which makes it ideal for grilling, frying, or baking. When done correctly the cheese develops a crispy exterior and a soft interior. It is often served as an addition to salads, wraps, burgers, and other dishes.
How is Halloumi Cheese Cooked?

Halloumi Cheese is famous for its high melting point. When it comes to cooking the cheese, it can be pan fried, grilled, or even air fried.
Pan-Frying Halloumi Cheese
To pan fry Halloumi Cheese you will need to heat a non-stick skillet over medium high heat. Add a little bit of oil and cook the slices 2-3 minutes per side. Once golden brown, they are finished.
Grilling Halloumi Cheese
You can grill Halloumi cheese in slices or in cubes. First you will want to brush the cheese with olive oil and grill for 3-4 minutes per side. The cheese is done when it is browned and slightly charred.
Baking Halloumi Cheese
Similar to grilling, you can bake both halloumi slices and cubes. Just add the cheese to a baking dish, drizzle with oil, top with herbs, and bake for 10-15 minutes at 300 degrees F. When the cheese is softened it is done.
Air-Frying Halloumi Cheese
Air-frying is another good method for cooking Halloumi Cheese. Start by heating your air-fryer to 390 degrees F. Cook for 4 minutes, flip, and cook for another 4 minutes. Once golden brown they are finished.
How is Halloumi Cheese Made
Halloumi is extremely popular in Easter Mediterranean. It is made by heating milk (often a mixture of goat’s milk and sheep’s milk) and adding rennet to coagulate it. The curds are then cooked to separate the cheese from the whey. The cheese is then formed into blocks or shapes, then soaked in brine for preservation.
How is Halloumi Cheese Used?
Halloumi Cheese is a very versatile cheese. The cheese can be enjoyed solo or in sandwiches, wraps, burgers, side dishes, pasta or in a halloumi cheese salad. Many people will also enjoy halloumi cheese paired with watermelon as a summer snack. Additionally, many vegetarians will use halloumi cheese as a meat alternative or protein source in burgers, fajitas, and curries.
