I genuinely will never understand why big companies in the United States charge $10+ for a 2 ounce tube of diaper cream that doesn’t really work or is full of hidden chemicals that cause skin irritation. Before you get mad at me I used to be one of those moms that spent $12 on a tiny little thing of Earth Mama Diaper Balm that never actually worked on a legitimate diaper rash. I am so glad that I learned how to make the best diaper cream for my baby’s bottom that has a simple natural ingredient list and a gentle formula. Also, it is safe to use with disposable diapers and cloth diapers.
What to know about the Food and Drug Administration and Non-Toxic Baby Products
- Most non-toxic baby products, including diaper creams, are not required to have FDA approval prior to being available for consumers.
- The FDA does not require approval for anything considered cosmetic prior to being available for consumers.
- This includes baby lotion, baby wash, baby shampoo, diapers, baby wipes, etc
- Even with rigorous product testing the FDA cannot guarantee complete absence of risk for any product due to limited scientific knowledge.
- Companies are the ones responsible for providing data to the FDA about the safety of their own products.
- The United States does not have regulation standards as to the use of things like Formaldehyde in baby products.
Honestly, I could go on and on with this topic but that is not what you are here for. You’re here for better options for effective treatment of your baby’s skin.

- Zinc Oxide Powder Uncoated & Non-Nano – $9.99
- Non-Nano Zinc Oxide will help to form a protective barrier on the skin helping to prevent moisture and other irritants from penetrating the skin. This is helpful when reducing diaper rash symptoms by reducing inflammation, absorbing moisture, and promoting skin cell turnover. Additionally, Zinc Oxide also provides antimicrobial and antifungal properties. Products with at least 20% of Zinc Oxide are the most effective.

- Organic Coconut Oil – $5.89
- Coconut oil is not something that would be effective on its own for a diaper rash on your baby, however when combined with the other mentioned ingredients it does help by moisturizing the skin and creating a protective layer on the skin that will prevent further endocrine disruption. It is also helpful with reducing inflammation.
- Because Coconut oil contains active ingredients like fatty acids, phytosterols, and lauric acid it is also considered an active ingredient in this diaper cream.

When these natural ingredients are combined correctly, they complement each other in their fight against diaper rashes. They are perfect for external use between diaper changes whether you are changing wet diapers or dirty diapers.
The shelf life for this cream is one year, yep 365 days of natural diaper cream goodness.
Some other ingredients you might consider adding to this Organic Diaper Cream
I do not use these ingredients so I will not get too in-depth with them. I would also look into information regarding a potential adverse reaction. However, nothing I mentioned or am going to mention contains harmful chemicals. They are all natural products.
- Organic Beeswax
- Castor Oil
- Organic Calendula
- Vitamin E
- Essential Oils
- Not all essential oils are appropriate to use on the skin. I would avoid using tea tree oil at all costs considering it is known to be toxic to children and animals.
- Breast Milk
- This will impact the shelf life
- Organic Olive Oil
- Organic Jojoba Oil
Okay, I will stop now–although I am very confident there are many things that could potentially be added to this ingredient list.
Although, I am a bit biased and think the products I use are the best products. You really do not need anything else unless you want to be super extra. Either way this is a high-quality recipe designed to fight a mild to bad rash.
So let’s get to the full recipe.
Homemade All-Natural Non-Toxic Diaper Rash Cream
The cheapest, All-Natural, Non-Toxic, High Quality Diaper Rash Cream that you will find.
Ingredients
- 4 Ounces of Organic Shea Butter
- 2 Ounces of Organic Coconut Oil
- 2 Ounces of Zinc Oxide
- 2 Ounces of Bentonite Clay
Instructions
- Add Shea Butter and Coconut oil into an oven safe container for melting.
- Turn your oven on the lowest setting and use it to melt your Shea Butter and Coconut oil to a liquid. Be careful that it does not burn or boil. This will take about 5 minutes. If you prefer, you could also do this in a microwave in a microwave safe container. I just prefer to use the oven.
- Once melted, remove your container from the oven and stir in Zinc Oxide and Bentonite Clay until smooth. The powder will make the liquid thicker but it will not be a cream.
- Transfer your mixture into a container with a lid, such as a mason jar, and allow to cool on your counter.
- In a few hours it will have a creamy texture and be ready for use.
- Store in a cool place out of direct sunlight to avoid melting, The cream will last one year.
Notes
- There are many different ways that you can melt the coconut oil and shea butter, choose whichever is best for you.
- The shelf life is one year, however I would still recommend making in small batches.
