Is Annie’s Macaroni actually healthy?
Maccaroni and Cheese is a staple in many households as a convenient and affordable comfort food. The first box of Macaroni and Cheese hit the shelf in the 1930’s from the infamous brand Kraft. In the first year of sale, Kraft sold over 8 million boxes as one box could feed a family of four for 19 cents. By the 1950’s it was a staple in school cafeterias and homes. The brand Annie’s was not founded until 1989 at that time was sold exclusively in New England.
Annie’s Story
It was not until the early 1990’s that Annie Macaroni and Cheese was found in chains like Costco and Kroger. Additionally, it was not advertised to be complete organic until 1998. Today, Annie’s sells many things with organic ingredients other than their organic pasta, in addition to their Mac & Cheese, such as yogurt, crackers, pretzels, cookies, frozen pizza, condiments, fruit snacks and even individual macaroni and cheese servings in a microwavable cup.
The brand claims to be free of any artificial flavors, artificial colors and synthetic colors, and artificial preservatives.
If you love the Annie’s brand, you might know all of that already. But did you know that the Annie’s brand was purchased by General Mills in 2014?
In 2021 the brand was involved in a class action lawsuit due to the presence of dangerous and harmful chemicals being found in their powdered cheddar.
What is so Special about this Organic Brand Annie’s Homegrown?
Annie’s has gained popularity for its commitment to its high standards with natural and organic ingredient list.
Additionally, the brand is said to focus on making a positive impact in the food industry. This is because they offer a healthy alternative to kid’s meals and snacks.
I’ll be honest, we actually enjoy this boxed macaroni from time to time. It is a totally delicious product, and my picky eater absolutely loves Annie’s products.
The pros of this cheese product are that it does contain organic ingredients, there are no artificial flavors and colors. Plus, it does offer a lower sodium content.
However, keep in mind that the product still contains processed cheese, it is high in saturated fat, and the wheat can be an issue for those who struggle with gluten sensitivities.
What about the Other options in Grocery Stores?
The grocery stores offer so many different kinds of noodle cheese products. It can be a bit overwhelming when you’re considering ingredients.
So let’s talk about it.
Kraft Mac and Cheese
It is only fitting that we talk about the first brand to hit the shelves before going any further.
So, Kraft Mac, is actually incredibly unhealthy. In 2024, Kraft was involved in a lawsuit over the use of synthetic forms of citric acid. Their product also contains sodium phosphates. Additionally, the brand contains high levels of sodium, saturated fat, and refined carbohydrates. That’s not all. Their products also contain ingredients that are not in their natural state which has raised concerns with EWG. Additionally, their products contain food additives and artificial colors and flavors.
Kraft cheese singles are not even healthy.
Velveeta Mac and Cheese
Velveeta was my absolute favorite as a kid. Honestly, I thought it was like a luxury macaroni and cheese. However, now as an adult and parent that actually cares about ingredients. I’ve come to know that Velveeta is actually the worst cheese product on the market.
Velveeta lacks the nutritional value of the standard mac and cheese. Additionally, the FDA has labeled Velveeta cheese as a “pasteurized prepared cheese product”. Meaning that it is not real cheese. Additionally, the brand is known to be high in sodium, saturated fat, and processed ingredients.
That being said, you should even avoid their cheese sauce.
Simple Truth Organic Shell and Cheese Macaroni
Simple Truth is another option that is a better option than traditional boxed mac. In fact, It rates very similar to Annie’s shells. It is USDA organic certified. This means there are no synthetic pesticides or fertilizers and is produced with ionizing radiation or genetic engineering. Simple truth also lacks artificial flavors or preservatives. Their cheese packet is made with real cheddar cheese, although many brands use cheese powder
There are some cons to this great option like it is still a processed food. It does contain saturated fat, allergens, and is high in sodium.
This is probably one of the best boxed mac options.
Do I Recommend these Cheese Brands?
To be completely honest, no I do not.
There is an easy healthier alternative when it comes to the classic cheddar meal.
For me, that is homemade Mac. There is no lack of freshness in homemade macaroni and cheese. Plus, it contains natural cheese, and you may choose to make it with organic foods.
What do I need to Make my Own Mac & Cheese
- Noodles
- You can use any noodles that you want. This could be organic wheat flour noodles or chickpea pasta. It is up to you.
- Cheese
- I like to be a bit fancy. I prefer to use Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese, and Cream Cheese. However, you can absolutely just use shredded cheese.
- Potato Starch
- You can also use corn starch. This is used to bind cheese to noodles.
- Butter
- You will use this with your choice of starch.
- Heavy Whipping Cream or Milk
- I prefer to use heavy whipping cream or whole milk when cooking, however you may want to use nonfat milk and that is absolutely fine too.
And that is it!
